The Stevenage Youth Council is a voice for young people in the Stevenage area. Join us and have your say - both for yourself and other young people!
What is the Stevenage Youth Council?
The Stevenage Youth Council (SYC) speaks up for young people in the Stevenage district. We have two permanent seats on Stevenage Borough Council and we regularly attend full council meetings. SYC also liaises with other youth councils and school councils.
Stevenage Youth Council is respected within the Stevenage Borough Council as well as at county level. We have a lot of status locally - and a loud voice!
Stevenage Youth Mayor
The Stevenage Youth Council was instrumental in creating the post of Stevenage Youth Mayor - the first youth mayor in Hertfordshire. SYC has the responsibility of running the election process for a new Youth Mayor every year.
What else does SYC do?
As well as Youth Mayor, the SYC have other projects that happen every year. These include:
Annual Youth Conference
This conference for young people is usually held in late November and typically has a theme. The theme is chosen by SYC members and depends on our biggest concerns at the time. All secondary schools in the Stevenage area are invited to send delegates to this all-day event which includes workshops, presentations, guests and plenty of food at lunch time.
Campaigns
Stevenage Youth Council runs at least one campaign a year with the aim of improving things for young people in Stevenage. Our discussions for campaign ideas take place within SYC meetings. If you want your ideas for future campaigns to be heard, come along and join us.
Surveys
SYC often creates and distributes surveys to young people to get their views, in order to represent them to others. Recently we have been making more use of social media to gather opinions.
Training
Staff from Services for Young People and the Stevenage Borough Council work together to provide training on a number of skills or issues. Do you want to know how youth councils work, how to chair a meeting or how to represent others? Perhaps you want to know more about conservation in Stevenage, the differences between the main political parties, or how to challenge the Chief Constable about the level of support and protection for young people?
Want to join us?
There are many things you can do to have your say. A youth council is a formal way of doing this. At the same time as learning new skills you will meet lots of new friends and… you will have a lot of FUN!
The Stevenage Youth Council meets at the Bowes Lyon Young People's Centre on Thursday afternoons. Come and join us - it is free!
Bowes Lyon Young People's Centre is fully wheelchair accessible.
