The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a real adventure from beginning to end. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, you just need to be aged between 14 and 24 and ready to jump into the best time of your life! Come along to the Welwyn Hatfield DofE sessions which are held every three weeks on a Friday at Hatfield Young People's Centre.
WHY SHOULD YOU GET INVOLVED?
Achieving a Duke of Edinburgh's Award will give you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for: from employers to colleges and even universities. It’s also about getting recognised for doing things you want to do - and may even be doing already. Above all, it’s great fun in an environment that will give you the necessary skills for life and work.
WHAT'S INVOLVED IN THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD?
Ideally you will start off at Bronze Level and work your way through progressively to Silver and even Gold Levels.
WHAT MAKES UP THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD?
There are four elements:
- Volunteering – undertaking service to individuals or the community
- Physical – improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities
- Skills – developing practical and social skills and personal interests
- Expedition – planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad
WHEN DOES THE BREAKS MANOR DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD TAKE PLACE?
Once every three weeks on a Friday:
- 7-8pm for 14-17 year olds
- 8-9pm for 18-24 year olds
No need to book. Just drop in for a chat or contact us for the next date - details below.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THESE EVENINGS?
During the evening sessions you will have the opportunity to meet your co-ordinator and discuss any concerns you may have about the DofE award. Time will also be allocated to allow you to add details to the online system eDofE, which charts your progress and records all your achievements.
Support may also be available to help you with completing a particular element of your volunteering, physical or skills challenges. For example, you may be able to carry out some cooking or take part in a physical activity. As the expedition season gets nearer, you will also be and shown and taught about items that will prepare you for your expedition section. Usually this will cover the following areas:
- Navigation and route planning
- First Aid
- Map and compass skills
- Camp craft and field cooking
- Countryside, Highway and Water Sports Safety Codes
- Teambuilding activities
- How to pack an expedition rucksack
